Monday evenings are my herring counting times - 3 10-minute watches at the white boards across the Coonamessett River in East Falmouth. Last year, looking for a way to pass the 10-minute time slots between counts I started photographing the plants around the river. It turned into an interesting way to chart the progress of spring. We count from beginning April to beginning June. The river is in the process of returning to river-dom from cranberry bog-dom. A couple miles of bogs, farmed over 100 years, have been nearly completely plowed under, great quantities of sand removed and the channel of the river restored from its irrigation-friendly path to the meander it once was. Last evening I found spreads of this dark red plant all through the former bog. Not a big surprise as this is vaccinium - cranberry.
